Frequently Asked Questions

Joli India works principally with 2 independent workshops in Delhi. One in South Delhi and one in North Delhi, and sources with artisans and small social enterprises as well as in local markets in Delhi and around India.

In South Delhi, Praveen leads a small team of skilled makers who create the Dhurri line, one bag at a time. He also stitches our limited-edition Chindi collection. Praveen has been producing for Indian and European brands for many years, and for the past few years, he has also pursued his passion of making furniture.
The Dhurri collection is crafted by experienced tailors, as the hand-work expertise required to make and finish the Dhurri styles is important. The thick and hard quality of the dhurrie carpet material requires diligent & efficient folding, trimming and pasting.
The making of the Chindi collection is also a labour intensive, manual process. It involves not only manipulating the multi-layered strips of fabric waste, but also hand-finishing the cord details all around each item, which is very time consuming.

In North Delhi, Madhumita gracefully manages different social enterprises to which she has dedicated her life. Since 2001, Trash to Cash is a skills development centre for adults and young adults with disabilities. Over the years, recycling flowers, plastics, fabrics, paper etc have become the corner stones of the employment program for these artists. In the workshops, many busy hands are being productive and earning a living, being creative with modelling, pottery, paper-mâché and painting, as well as using recycle and up-cycle materials as their art and craft. The Metallic line is being made there.
Prabhat’s Society for Child Development is the NGO Madhumita has created in 1992 to help children with mental and intellectual challenges to live a better life. You can donate to them directly if you wish to support the cause. Here is the link to the SFCD’s website to learn more about all the projects and donate to the fund raiser. https://sfcdindia.org.in

Every Metallic Clutch purchased by you, will be either helping special needs children learn life changing skills or help physically, mentally or socially handicapped adults earn a living for themselves and their families.

Yes, each bag or pouch is made is one of the 2 independent workshops. Each step to complete one of our products is made by hand. They are made in small batches of from 10 to 15, sometimes up to 25 limited edition pieces or one-of-a-kind pieces.

The outer shells of our products are made from a variety of materials: cottons, upcycle plastics, upcycle fabrics such as cotton or cotton mix knits and woven fabrics, genuine leathers and recycle leathers, wrist pullers are made faux-leather and we are trying to start to use an Indian-made bio leather for our future projects.
For the inner shells of our products, we use mainly lungis sourced from the local markets. They can be made from cotton or cotton mixed materials. Lungis are an Indian type of sarong worn by men. It can be worn as casual or formal wear, and is usually multicoloured and often in a checkered pattern. Joli India selects them for their exquisite colours and durability. We also use plain RFD or dyed poplin or other similar cotton fabrics for our linings.
All the materials we use for our bags are made in India. Some of the hardware we use might be made outside of India.

One of our moto is “use what is already there to create new”. We use eco-friendly fabrics such as handloom cottons and carpets woven by artisans in small enterprises, unprocessed cottons, recycle leathers. Many of our styles use upcycle pre consumer textile which originate from Indian factory wastes or from one of Panipat’s upcycling hubs as well as post-consumer textile and plastics wastes which are hand-woven in the NGO’s workshop in North Delhi. Our aim is also to reduce our carbon foot print and slow-down the fast fashion craze, by proposing unique, personal and meaningful handmade accessories slowly crafted with purpose.

Most of our bags can be cleaned by spot cleaning them or dry cleaning them. Do email us at info@joliindia.com if you need more specific caring tips.
